Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary

In the Yumthang Valley of North Sikkim, India, there is a protected area called the Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary. It is situated in the Yumthang Valley, some 150 kilometers from Gangtok, the Sikkim capital. The sanctuary has a surface area of around 43 sq. km. and is located between 3,500 and 4,000 meters above sea level. Several different rhododendron species may be found there, including the uncommon and imperiled Rhododendron niveum, also called the snow rhododendron. Other plant species found in the refuge include primula, gentian, and poppies. Many animal species, including musk deer, red pandas, and Himalayan black bears, also call the refuge home.

The refuge provides tourists with a number of hiking trails to enjoy the stunning scenery and diverse wildlife. The Yumthang Valley Trek, which passes through the sanctuary and provides breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and valleys, is the most well-liked hike. 
Ideal time to travel: While the rhododendron blooms are in full bloom, from April to June is the ideal time to visit Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary. Due to landslides and other obstructions, the sanctuary is closed from July to September during the monsoon season.
