Introduction of Hydraulic Lift to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Ellora Caves, a First for India, Learn More

The UNESCO World Heritage site of Ellora Caves is expecting a hydraulic lift installation for ease of access to the cave's upper structures.

An occurrence of rare nature is being planned at the UNESCO World Heritage site of Ellora Caves in Aurangabad, Maharashtra. To improve tourism and accessibility, the government in association with the Archeological Survey of India (ASI) has decided to install a hydraulic lift for travelers. This pronouncement has been given after accessing the architectural condition of the caves through which thousands of tourists flock.

Tourists of both national and international audiences are being reported to visit this site every day. This will mark the first-ever heritage site in India to receive a hydraulic lift.

It is also a positive change for people who face disabilities and to whom accessibility can mean everything. This will bring in more people who originally had hesitancy because of convenience’s sake.

There are 34 caves that grace the complex of Ellora and Cave 16 in particular, popularly known as the Kailash Cave, flaunts a dual-story architectural design where tourists have to climb steps. This area does include stairs and a ramp for wheelchairs, but ASI has still decided to go forward with the decision of installing small lifts on both sides. The cost of the project is still under discussion.

More changes have been thought of and presented to the government to make the site of Ellora Caves a more appealing tourist destination to the world. Some of the changes proposed to the government are providing lighting, expanding the number of ticket counters, creating photographing points, constructing restroom blocks with modern sanitary amenities, and so on said Mr. Milan Kumar Chauley, a superintendent archaeologist of Aurangabad circle.

The naturalistic setting of these caves has attracted throngs upon throngs to witness its beauty. The World Heritage site of Ellora Caves is not only a one-of-a-kind architectural and technological feat, but it also embodies the spirit of tolerance that was prevalent in ancient India, with shrines dedicated to Buddhism, Hinduism, and Jainism.
