Indian Railways Transform Old Train Coaches into Restaurants at Katra and Jammu Stations

The Indian Railways is breathing new life into two disused railway coaches, turning them into enticing theme-based restaurants at the bustling railway stations of Katra and Jammu. This innovative endeavour, aptly titled "Beautiful Restaurants on Wheels," involves a meticulous refurbishment process, transforming the retired train coaches into unique and charming rail coach restaurants. The initiative not only recycles old resources but also offers travellers and locals a delightful dining experience in a nostalgic setting.

In Jammu and Katra, Indian Railways is actively working on creating two charming rail-coach restaurants. This innovative initiative involves the transformation of old train coaches into inviting dining establishments. According to Prateek Srivastava, Divisional Transportation Manager in Jammu, tenders have been awarded to two separate parties for this venture. Anticipated to generate an annual revenue of Rs 50 lakh, these AC restaurants are set to enhance the culinary experience for visitors and locals alike.

The plan involves offering old coaches to private parties for the creation of modern restaurants tailored to their designs.

The inaugural coach restaurant is set to welcome its first patrons by December, with the coaches already positioned for the transformation. These upcoming dining establishments will bear the names 'Annapurna' and 'Maa Durga'. The conversion process from a coach to a fully operational restaurant is estimated to take approximately 90 days, during which the facilities essential for a smooth dining experience will be integrated, as shared by Pradeep Gupta, the owner of Annapurna Restaurant Said PTI.

Similar rail-coach restaurants have found success in 9 to 10 major railway stations across India, inspiring this initiative.

The Railways' Food-on-Wheels restaurants are designed with stylish interiors and exteriors, complemented by display panels presenting virtual tours of diverse destinations in Jammu and Kashmir. These panels will showcase captivating photos, capturing the cultural essence of Dograland, as informed by officials.
