The Statue of Unity, located in Gujarat, India, is the world’s tallest statue and the world’s tallest monument. It stands tall at a height of 182 meters and pays tribute to the Iron Man of India, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. The statue is located facing the Narmada Dam on the Sadhu Bet island, approximately 3.2 km downstream from the dam. The statue is a colossal representation of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and is built with cutting-edge technology. It has been designed to withstand wind speeds of up to 60 m/s, vibrations, and even earthquakes.
The statue was designed by renowned sculptor Ram Vanji Sutar, and built by Larsen & Toubro. It took 33 months to complete and was inaugurated on 31 October 2018 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. It is a tribute to the hard work, dedication, and foresight of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel who, through his leadership and guidance, united India by integrating 562 princely states into the Union of India. The statue is made up of over 70,000 metric tonnes of cement, 18,500 tonnes of reinforced steel, and 1,850 tonnes of bronze cladding.
The Statue of Unity is a fascinating sight to behold! From the viewing galleries located at 152 meters, visitors can get a spectacular view of the Narmada River, the hills of the Satpura and Vindhya ranges, and the lush greenery around the statue. Inside the statue, there is a museum that showcases the life and works of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. The statue also houses a research centre, an audio-visual gallery, and a memorial garden.
