Chamoli is a district of Uttarakhand state in India. It is located in the Central Himalayan region and is surrounded by pristine greens, undulating valleys, stunning vistas, breathtaking landforms and various varieties of flora. The district was carved out of the erstwhile Garhwal district in 1960. The Chipko Movement also known as “Hug the Trees” movement started from Mandal Village in Chamoli District. The movement was aimed at protecting trees and forests from being destroyed by commercial activities such as mining and deforestation.
