If you are looking for a spiritual and adventurous getaway in the Himalayas, then you should definitely visit the Bijli Mahadev Temple in Kullu, Himachal Pradesh. This temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, the destroyer of evil and the god of lightning. The temple is located at an altitude of about 2460 meters on a hilltop that offers a panoramic view of the Kullu and Parvati valleys. The temple is famous for its miraculous power and its unique architecture. The temple has a 60-foot-high flagpole that attracts divine blessings in the form of lightning every 12 years. The lightning strikes the Shiva lingam inside the temple and breaks it into pieces. The priest then collects the pieces and joins them with a paste made of Naz (a type of grass), lentil flour and unsalted butter. After a few days, the lingam is restored to its original form.

The temple is believed to be around 500 years old and was built by Raja Jagat Singh in 1652. However, some legends say that it was originally constructed by the Pandavas during their exile in the Himalayas. The temple is one of the most revered temples in the region and attracts thousands of pilgrims every year. There is also a fair held at the temple in August, which is celebrated with great fervour and enthusiasm.
The best time to visit Bijli Mahadev Temple is from March to September, as it remains closed during December and March due to heavy snowfall. To reach the temple, you have to trek for about 3 km from Chansari village, where you can park your vehicle near a bus stop. The trek is easy for beginners but can be challenging for some due to the high altitude and steep slopes. You can also hire an off-road vehicle or a local guide if you prefer.
The trek to Bijli Mahadev Temple is worth every step as you get to witness breathtaking views of nature along with spiritual bliss. You can also enjoy some tea and snacks at stalls near the temple or camp overnight if you want to experience more serenity. Bijli Mahadev Temple is truly a divine destination that will leave you awestruck by its beauty and power.
