Porbandar Bird Sanctuary is a popular bird-watching destination located in the city of Porbandar, Gujarat, India. It is spread over an area of approximately 1 square kilometer and is situated on the banks of the Ranghola River, which flows into the Arabian Sea. The sanctuary was established in 1988 with the aim of conserving the region's rich avian biodiversity.
The Porbandar Bird Sanctuary is home to a diverse range of bird species, including both resident and migratory birds. It is particularly known for its population of waterbirds, such as pelicans, flamingos, storks, herons, and cormorants. During the winter months, the sanctuary becomes a hotspot for migratory birds, with species such as sandpipers, plovers, and gulls visiting from as far as Siberia and Central Asia.
Mangrove woods that surround the sanctuary provide as both a natural habitat for the birds and a preventative measure against coastal erosion. Visitors can view the birds in their natural habitat from the sanctuary's many watchtowers and observation points. The refuge also features a walking path that enables guests to get up up and personal with the birds and other species.
