The Uperkot Fort is a historic fortress located in the city of Junagadh in the western Indian state of Gujarat. The fort dates back to the Mauryan era and is believed to have been built by Chandragupta Maurya in the 3rd century BCE. Over the centuries, it has been occupied by various rulers and has undergone numerous renovations and expansions.
The Uperkot Fort is situated on a hilltop and covers an area of over 80 acres. The fort is surrounded by a high wall and has several gateways and bastions. Within the fort, there are several temples, tanks, and other structures, including a stepwell known as the Adi Kadi Vav. The fort also has a unique underground chamber that is believed to have been used for military purposes.
One of the main attractions of the Uperkot Fort is the Jama Masjid, a mosque built in the 15th century by Sultan Mahmud Begada. The mosque is a beautiful example of Indo-Islamic architecture and has intricate carvings and motifs on its walls and pillars. Another notable feature of the fort is the Navghan Kuvo, a stepwell that is believed to have been built during the Solanki era.
