Is it safe to go Banke Bihari Temple during Janmashtami celebration

anke Bihari Temple during Janmashtami can be risky if you are not prepared, mainly due to extreme overcrowding rather than any security threat. Roughly 1 to 1.5 million pilgrims pour into the Mathura-Vrindavan corridor on Janmashtami night alone, moving through lanes that are, in places, under four metres wide, and the administration has capped entry numbers at the temple in past years after a fatal stampede. Temple management has previously advised devotees to avoid bringing children, elderly people, persons with disabilities, and those with illnesses during peak hours, citing past health issues and deaths from overcrowding.

That said, safety measures have improved. Security now includes retired army and paramilitary staff instead of private guards, and a new entry-exit system was introduced to prevent overcrowding incidents like those seen during Janmashtami 2022. A 21-tonne steel railing system is also being installed to regulate crowd movement, along with separate entry/exit routes, timed darshan, extra barricading, CCTV, and more police deployment.

So, is it safe? It's manageable if you're a healthy adult who arrives early, avoids peak midnight hours if possible, stays alert in the crowd, and doesn't bring kids or elderly family members. But if you're sensitive to crowds, heat, or crush situations, it's genuinely risky, and you may want to consider ISKCON Vrindavan or Prem Mandir instead, which handle large crowds more comfortably, or watch via live-streamed darshan.
